Masjid Baiturrahman Aceh

Located in Aceh province, the mosque is the silent witness to the 8.6-magnitude earthquake in 2004 that unleashed a massive tsunami that swept through Aceh and places as far away as India and Sri Lanka. Reports said that the earthquake and tsunami claimed more than 130,000 in Aceh. Many people survived the tsunami after they took refugee inside the mosque.

Masjid Baiturrahman has experienced ups and downs, along with the struggle of the Aceh people. The mosque was built in 1612 under the administration of Sultan Iskandar Muda, but it was burnt down during the Duth aggression in 1873. It was rebuilt in 1882 and has experienced expansion since then.

I'd like to visit Aceh one day.
