A Project On Weather And Climate Information Dissemination For Farmers And Fishermen

Hola, amigos!

I disappeared for more than 1.5 months, but it was not without reason. I had to organize another site visit for journalists in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara by mid November and then prepare to go to COP 20 in Lima, Peru. Everything moved so fast like a roller coaster. I was glad so far things go as planned.

Let's start with the serious story on the site visit.

The site in Kupang was part of a small grant program that disseminates weather and climate information to farmers and fishermen.

The project builds the information dissemination system through an operator, who compiles weather and climate information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG,www.maritim.bmkg.go.id), the Integrated Planting Calendar (KATAM,www.katam.litbang.deptan.go.id), the Ocean Research and Observation Agency (BPOL,www.bpol.kkp.go.id), SI-Mail (pdpt-kkp.org) and other sourcesThe information is later translated to text messages format to be distributed to around 1,000 farmers and fishermen in Kupang municipality and regency.

We divided the team into two groups: first group went to FGD + the site at Tablolong beach and second group went to the site in Semau island. I went with the first group, and here are the photos.

We went to Tablolong beach and interviewed the seaweed farmers there

We had a chance to visit Oenesu waterfall, which is like an oasis in the scorching Kupang

Meanwhile, the second group had a more laid back trip as they held discussion with farmers and fishermen under the shades of trees and roamed the pristine beaches of Semau island. Here are the photos taken by my colleague JHP.
